ABC Phonics Bin
Basic Materials:
This bin consists of alphabet flashcards, blocks, and various toys and items collected from her room that start with letters A-D. Foam, magnet, or any other makeshift letters work just the same.
Benefits:
It’s a great way to begin familiarizing your child with the letters of the alphabet in a fun and interactive way. While they fiddle and play with the objects in the bins they are also building vocabulary, learning phonics, and letter and sound identification in a low stress way. Once your child is showing readiness, as an added challenge you can begin to incorporate exercises like matching uppercase and lowercase letters, ABC letter ordering, and learning the letters and order of the letters in their name.
How I Interact:
I collected various items from around her room that started with letters A-D and put them in 4 separate bins. I then started to point to all the items in each bin, having her name them as we went along. She’d say “corn”, and I’d follow up with “Yes, corn! Corn starts with C, cuh cuh corn”, and so on and so forth. We do this bin and others like it throughout the week as constant exposure increases familiarity and recognition.
Starting out, we did just two bins with letters A and B, and when I felt like she understood and was able to identify them consistently we added C, and upped it this way to D.
