I introduced this work to Yumi at 21 months. I started by placing the blocks in a straight line, lifting the cylinders out of their respective sockets, and lining them up in order in front of the block. I then picked up the first cylinder that was removed and put it back in the socket, and did the same for the remaining cylinders. I removed them again and put them in front of the block in order and motioned to let her try. Each block of cylinders varies in diameter and height. To challenge her I used just two blocks, but I rearranged the order that they were placed in front of the block. You can make different presentations with the blocks and offer as many as you deem fit. As an extension for the little olders you can add a blindfold and have them trace and feel the sockets to match their corresponding cylinders. Yumi took an interest in locks at around 18 months old. So I grabbed this one from our local home improvement store and she was easily entertained for the better half of an hour her first go at it! This type of work requires a great deal of focus and offers good practice in hand eye coordination, fine motor skill, and wrist work! So this basket was the biggest hit as early as 6 months. Naturally, Yumi loved the tambourine, egg shakers, xylophone, and drum to start, all simple to use and make lots of noise. As she got older and learned new skills she moved onto the wooden whistle, harmonica, and the triangle, and so on and so forth. This basket sits on her shelf where she has daily access to it, and will go through, and rediscover an instrument she previously held no interest in or wasn’t capable of playing just yet. Every time she motioned for me to unbuckle it, I placed her fingers on the respective parts to practice hand over hand squeezing to unfasten it. She has yet to master unbuckling, but is still very intrigued with the skill of it all. Now at 16 months this activity looks a little different since she’s moved from simply fitting the lid onto the jar to now twisting. Practicing with large beads makes it easier to achieve this task. To simplify even further, you can use a shoelace or pipe cleaner instead of string as they provide a bit more firmness, and make it easier to lace the bead on. Yumi laced two beads on ONE TIME, and never showed any interest past this! So I found an old one of mine, collected a blend of real life items, like a photo of mommy and daddy, some old subscription passes, and toy credit cards and coins. Put inside for Yumi to pull out, observe, and put back in. She was very into the zipper aspect, and the coins were an added bonus to retrieve once she got the zipper open, but she really loved the photo! Now she is capable of getting her little fingers in to pull the items out, but has not necessarily mastered opening the little space with her fingers to slide the items back in with ease. Fill them with items that have very distinct smells. Here, I’ve used coffee beans, an orange wedge, and some ground cinnamon. Ideally I would have liked to use cinnamon sticks, but didn’t have any in the cupboard. To start I put the jars to my own nose and make a loud sniffing sound. Then I handed it to Yumi, for her to do the same. In the past we’ve used lavender, ground peppercorns, and lemon peels. Yumi sniffed the peppercorns so hard it made her sneeze! These are a great way to engage your little one’s developing sense of smell! For the little olders you can use cotton swabs and essential oils (i.e. peppermint, lavender, lemon) and let them try to guess the scent, or just use a blindfold!
