Not Another Mommy Blog
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want
Making a blog/website available to take up space as a Black woman, a Black mom, Black educator, and yada yada seems more than relevant and timely. IT. FEELS. IMPORTANT! It’s the representation, and the “about damn time” for me, and I’m enjoying doing it.
Education is elitist, and the US American education system is white supremacy legitimized. It is tailored to whiteness and leaves little room for other, for culture, diversity, for fullness, enrichment, or even accuracy. So naturally when it comes to sensory activities, bins, or Montessori influenced learning, be it Pinterest, Etsy, a mommy blog, or an early childhood educators website, it is, of course also white! Realizing that I’d have to search a little harder to find Black moms doing this fueled the urge to do it myself. So here I am with my Black child, to show her this is for you too, and sharing in the hopes that other Black parents and parents of color will also adopt this notion!
Since I’ve started implementing Montessori methods in teaching Yumi and sensory bins, and what have you, I have stumbled across ONE Black mom, whose page is devoted to sensory bins without having adamantly searched. I mean genuinely stumbled upon. Typing “Black” before typing out the rest of everything is fine because I typically want what pertains to me, but when nothing pops up it can feel hopeless. So let me add to the small handful. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right?!
to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
