Color Sorting Bin

Objective: Sort the items in the tray by placing them in their corresponding bin!

Objective: Sort the items in the tray by placing them in their corresponding bin!

Basic Materials:

First, and fully optional, is the rainbow rice as a base. Second, an assortment of items collected from her room to sort by color. As an alternative to the rice you could place scarves at the bottom of the bin, we have also done it this way, and may also remove any potential confusion the rainbow rice option may present.

Benefits:

This one is perfect for Yumi, at 19 months she is right at the age to continue learning, identifying, and sorting colors. She may not yet be ready to say them, but can match them just fine.

How I Interact:

I demonstrated this activity by first saying the names of each color repeatedly. For example, I grabbed an item that was red and said “red fish, this fish is red, and goes in the red bin!” and so on and so forth. It is important to note that we are just starting out and so as not to overwhelm her I broke up ROY-G-BIV by giving her just the first 3 colors to start, i.e. red, orange, and yellow.
